Socioeconomic Studies Division

 

The goal of this division, which was established in 1990, is to achieve sustainable and comprehensive development of the desert, including agricultural, social, and human resources development. The division is also interested in the establishment of an information database covering ex- isting research and studies conducted in desert areas, including information on nomadic societies

 

Activities:

The division carries out the following short term activities:

bullet

Investigation of viable desert communities as a prerequisite to agricultural development. 

bullet

Studies directed toward identifying new land reclamation sites, and setting socioeconomic indicators for desert areas.

bullet

Identifying model private farms to be used as centers of diffusion for surrounding farms.

bullet

Conduding socioeconomic studies in the new lands for different groups of farmers, i.e. capital intensive, middle size, and small farmers.

bullet

Information dissemination in the form of extension bulletins and booklets, executive seminars for decision makers, and training of post graduates.

bullet

Abstrading relevant results from previous studies to provide information and educational material for both farmers and decision makers.

The division is involved in the following long term activities:

Identifying problems faced by people in the desert governorates from the point of the view of inhabitants and officials.

bullet

Evaluating cooperatives, national firms, individual private farms, and the tenure system to identify optimal Investment potential.

bullet

Conducting policy studies to help establish an export system for high return horticultural products in desert areas.

bullet

Conducting economic assessments of water use in desert lands.

Investigating the role of the private sector in land reclamation

The division is also engaged in developing socioeconomic maps of Egyptian deserts which include socioeconomic traits, locations of new settlements, cultivable land, available water resources, and probable pasture regions Study of socioeconomic aspects focuses on marketing systems, export systems, land tenure systems, local government, social organization, types of land settlement, human resources, and both local and regional organizations and institutions

Basic socioeconomic and technical indicators for investment and location of land reclamation projects for the public and private sectors in Egypt, funded by the French Food Aid Counterpart Fund starting from 1994.
